Rare large hand sewn 13 Star Civil War era flag. There are no pre-1800 era 13 Star Flags available. The first record of 13 Star Flags being used (This does not apply the The Navy) is during Mexican War 1846-1848. The next time they appear is during The Civil War as a patriotic symbol. This flag is a rare specimen. Made of wool with individual hand cut stripes treadle sewn together. The canton is in two panels that is hand sewn together. It has beautiful hand cut and hand sewn double applique stars. It has rare button hole hand stitched grommets which is an indication of an earlier flag around 1858-1860. There is a hand stitched reinforcement patch sewn to the top left corner by the grommet. A 3″ vertical hand stitched repair in the canton between the stars on the third row of stars.
