Rare Civil War Flag with very rare star pattern known as a “Great Star” as the stars are arranged in the shape of a large star. It also has four larger stars in each corner, this feature is also very rare to have on a flag. This rare flag has a hand written note attached to it written in period ink on period paper stating – “Found at the battle of The Wilderness by John W. James 17th Regt. Main Vols. We also have the genealogy family history of this soldier who is also a relative of the famous outlaw Jesse James. Made of silk with hand stitched edges. This star pattern is the most rare and most desirable for serious flag collectors. The Great Star pattern first appeared in 1818 as a design of Naval Captain Samuel Reid to make the American flag more recognizable on the high seas. The flag has stains and few tiny holes as you would expect for a Flag found on the battlefield and is almost 150 years old.
