This is a very rare and unusual 39 Star Flag. The canton is resting on a red stripe which is very rare to find. Usually always the canton is resting on a white stripe. Folklore says that when the canton rest on a red stripe the Country is at war. However during the Civil War and other wars 99.9% or more of all flags the canton is on a white stripe. It also has only 11 stripes versus the 13 stripes which is normal for flags. This flag is printed cotton which is common for flags during this era as they were made like any other “yard goods” material. It also has unusual alternating up-side-down stars.
