Description
39 Star Antique Flag with a Triple Medallion Star Pattern making this flag extremely rare. American parade flags of the 19th & 20th century represent some of the most beautiful designs and patterns ever displayed on American Flags. This Flag is a stunning period flag made of cotton fabric with printed stars, and is one of the most rare parade flags in America today with only 4-5 known to exist. One of the most notable features to this flag would be that the 39 star flag was considered to be an anticipatory flag, which means flag makers produced the 39 star flag in anticipation of the addition of 2 territories. In 1876 we had an official count of 37 stars on the flag, with the addition of Colorado the official count was 38. In 1889, two states were brought in on the same day, North and South Dakota bringing the now official count to 40, which means the 39 star count may have been accurate for less than a day. There are four stars flanked on all four corners of the flag standing as centuries over the three wreath pattern displaying a spectacular event of dancing stars. The outer wreath contains 15 stars, the next inner wreath contains 10 stars while the final inner wreath contains 8 stars encompassing the final 2 stars in the center. This unique feature of 2 stars symbolizing a center star position is quite rare and has not to our recollection been encountered more than a handful of times at best. Most typical center star patterns would be one center star of equal size or larger to its surrounding stars. This 39 star flag is a Gem among all the parade flags today and the centerpiece of any rare flag collection. Description/Condition: The 39 star flag is made of cotton, printed on both sides. There is a tiny hole located in the center of the first red stripe and very little staining situated in the center of the flag. The color canton is bold in color.
