Antique Texas flags are extremely rare & very hard to find. Texas became the 28th State in 1845. The flag was quickly out of date as the 29th State was added in 1846. So very few 28 star flags were made. This is a 50th anniversary flag from 1895 which is even more rare as very few were made to celebrate the event most likely in Austin Texas on the Capitol steps with the Governor & other State dignitaries present. Texas Flags which the a 28 star flag are impossible to find. If this was a hand sewn flag from 1845 it would be selling for $25-$35,000.00 or more. Anything Texas is rare & highly collectable. Based on how the flag is constructed it dates to the 50th anniversary which would be 1895. As a centennial type flag only one would have been made to celebrate the event. The red was most certainly made of natural dye as it has run at some point in the past from being used in the rain. Red dye is made from the Cochineal insect which lives in cactus in Texas and other western states. Indians and even the Aztecs & Maya people used this insect to make red dye. Texas won its Independence from Mexico in 1836 and formed The Republic of Texas. In 1845 The US joined the US with a treaty the only State to do so. Rare flag even with its flaws.
