Description

Rare 11 Star Civil War Inclusionary Flag

A very scarce and one of a kind, hand made, hand sewn Civil War Inclusionary Flag. Most likely created by a patriotic southern seamstress very early in the Civil War. A rare Pro-Confederate Inclusionary 11 Star Flag promoting the first 11 States to secede. During the early period of the War individuals created Exclusionary flags and Inclusionary flags. Exclusionary flags eliminated the Confederate States from the flags star count for example a 34 Star flag would be 23 star flag where a Inclusionary flag showed 7 to 11 Stars. This flag is an example of what Confederate expert Howard Madaus terms a vernacular inclusion flag. He believe such flags were made from December 20, 1860 and February 2, 1861 to commemorate the secession of the first seven states, and before the official adoption of the “stars and bars” or First National Flag of the Confederacy. These flags are termed “vernacular” because they are the product of the average southerner, and not the Confederate government, and “inclusionary” because the persons making them included the number of stars into the canton that he or she thought should be “included” in the still-to-be-devised Confederate national flag, and not necessarily the number of states that actually had seceded or joined the nascent Confederacy. This flag is a excellent specimen made with meticulous care and skill. Made of heavy weight cotton with natural dyes. The blue made from indigo has faded to a nice lighter blue. The red is still fairly strong, the white has turned to a light tan as is typical of antique flags. The white does have a few areas of darker brown scattered about. Small spot of blue paint in center of flag. There are four small holes top right and center. Overall it is in very good condition. The stripes are individually hand cut and hsnd cranked/pumped treadle sewn together. The flags stars are double applique hand cut and hand sewn on in a tilted star arrangement. The star arrangement is also quite unusual with a 4-3-4 arrangement. The canton is made of two panels that are hand sewn together. Also an indication of a War time made flag with material shortages. Frame size is 41″x66″ Flag showing is 34″x59
