This very rare 38 Star flag which is stenciled on to a very fine high quality silk with a linen type weave & texture and has a elaborate sewn border. Stenciling has been used since the 1400’s. This flag was very expensive in its day as only the wealthy could afford a flag like this. Sometimes a flag like this would also be called a kerchief, but it still represents a flag. Also used during Presidential Campaigns and at the Nomination Convention to show support for their candidate. It has an extremely rare star pattern as the stars are arranged in a scattered circle as the stars take the shape of a star. Dates from 1877 to 1890 Ulysses S. Grant & Rutherford B.
