Description
37 Star Antique American Flag / SOLD
Circa 1867
Authentic antique rare 37 American Flag. The stars are arranged in a rare pattern called a Medallion making it a very rare flag. Even though the 37 star flag was used for nine years they are fairly rare.
In this time of expansion of the country westward, all the western territories were lobbying Congress and The President to become the next State. I believe flag manufacturers were reluctant to make too many flags with the current star count, as they would be obsolete when a new state was added. This is probably way pre-1900 era flags are hard to find.
The stars are printed on cotton, the stripes are individually hand cut and hand sewn and made loomed of cotton. The canton has faded a lot from time and because the dyes used to color it are made of natural elements that fade quickly when exposed to sun and rain over time. There is some loss of material on the top left hoist area. Some stains throughout the flag. The red is still strong and the white has turned tan.
Antique flag hand sewn flags with rare star arrangements such as this one are very hard to find and are highly collectible.
The 37 Star flag was voted into the Union by Congress on March 1, 1867 and served till July 3rd 1876
Presidents who served during this time in American history: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, and Grover Cleveland.
