40 Star Flag Rare and Seldom Seen ~ 1889 ~ Antique Flag
Made of a un-starched rough muslin fabric. It is stenciled by hand. The stenciling is not perfect as the stars look very slightly blurry, but that could also be on purpose. The Founding Fathers wrote only one sentence about our flag that the stars should be arranged as a new constellation. So early flag makers tried to arrange the stars in various patterns to give the look of the night sky. Stars do look blurry at night that could be the intent of this flag maker as the stars are quite unusual and not seen before. This flag is quite unique as it appears to have been stenciled red and blue at the same time.
Congress voted five States into the Union in 1889 and 1890. These States all became official States on July 4th 1890. This made the 39, 40, 41 and 42 Star Flags basically instantly obsolete. The 43 Star was temporary the official count but a few weeks later Congress added the 44th States making the 43 Star Flag also instantly obsolete. Out of this group the 40, 41 & 43 Star Flags are quite rare, very hard to find and seldom seen. They are highly prized to collectors.
