38 Star Flag Kerchief / SOLD
Exquisite 38 Star Flag Kerchief with museum framing and UV acrylic. The flag banner has a very rare star arrangement where the stars are arranged in a square. It is made of fine silk with hand sewing. Overall condition is very good as it appears that it has been well taken care of and preserved since 1876. This is a beautiful showpiece and a great example of craftsmanship.
The 38-Star Flag: This Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1877. A star was added for the admission of Colorado (August 1st 1876) and was to last for 13 years. The five Presidents to serve under this flag were; Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881), James A. Garfield (1881), Chester A. Arthur (1881-1885), Grover Cleveland (1885-1889), and Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893). The US Congress passed an enabling act in 1875, specifying the requirements for the the Territory of Colorado to become a state. On August 1st, 1876, President Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. It became known as the Centennial State, as a result of becoming an official state 28 days after the Centennial of the US. Even though the official star count for US flags in 1876 was the 37.
