C.1840 AMERICAN GRENADIER-TYPE CAP PLATE Figure 164 in the Smithsonian Book on “American Military Insignia 1800-1851” by Campbell & Howell, Bulletin 235. Quoting the book, this is one of the most beautiful examples of the die-makers art in the National collections (also the largest). On a sunburst over clouds is an eagle grasping the top of the Federal shield, superposed on a panoply of arms and colors. Stamped in thick sheet brass. Marked “BALE” on bottom right. Archival framing.
