Description
Rare hand sewn 39 Star Flag from 1890. The sewing machine was invented in 1840 and by the late 1860’s and early 1870’s most flags were sewn on a foot pump/treadle sewing machine. As this flag is hand sewn in 1890 it is rare to find a hand sewn flag this late in time. Even though western States were expecting Congress to add the 39th State for seven years before they did it is possible this flag was made around 1883 in anticipation of the 39th State being added sooner than Congress actually did. Made of wool, natural dyes as the flag has faded overall but still retains nice color for its age (121-128 years old). Several period repairs on the top left and right and bottom right corners. A few rips along the bottom which can be mended easily and a few holes here and there as expected with a old flag like this. Beautiful hand cut & sewn stars made of plain white cotton fabric. The reverse has beautiful peek-a-boo stars. Original heavy cotton hoist. A beautiful hand sewn flag, with beautiful hand sewn stars. Rarity Rating; 3 Rated on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the rarest. This flag rates a { 3 } and is priced accordingly. Email for price and shipping. Each flag comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. A genuine antique American Flag.
