Very rare Spanish American War period US Army Cavalry Guidon Swallowtail 45 Star Flag. Made of heavy weight cotton with treadle sewn edges. The Guidon is a military standard (flag) that a Company or Platoon sized unity would carry. A guidon can be rectangular but sometimes has a triangle portion removed on the fly end this is known as a swallowtail. It was done to make the flag fly through the air with much less resistance when traveling on a horse and last longer than a normal rectangle guidon. It is usually carried close to the unit commander (front or along side of) and can be called a “guide” flag or generals or commanders guide flag. The condition is fairly good as it has been well used in the field. It has several splits in the material from use. And it looks like the sleeve hoist was sewn closer to the flag as the original portion of the sleeve hoist wore through and needed repairing.
