Beautiful 13 Star Flag that is entirely hand sewn. Individual wool stripes and cotton stars masterfully hand stitched together. It has four grommets, the outer two are brass the center two are zinc. The two zinc were probably added after it was originally made. It has four hand made red, white and blue tassels made of cord attached to the four grommets. The flag hangs vertical and was most likely used as a ceremonial flag or used at a special event as it is very unique and differs from other flags. Stenciled on the hoist it says; US ENSIGN NO. 48 NAVY YARD NY JULY 1890. The fly end is double hemmed and there is a half hole on the right side half way down as seen in the photo. The white has turned to tan. Overall the flag is in very good condition for its age and use, the colors are still strong. The two tone blue in the canton is caused from a reflection from the flash.
