Rare Navy Ships Commissioning Pennant. Made of wool, machine sewn stars, 72″ long (6′), with zinc grommets. Commissioning Pennants are only used twice, when the newly built ship leaves port the first time as it is being commissioned and when it returns to its port. The Commissioning Pennant is always given to the ships Captain and seldom enter the marketplace. Circa 1890-1910 According to the US Navy Dept. no record explains why early American sailors used seven stars on a Navy Ship commissioning pennant.
