Antique 13 Star Flag Ensign. Large hand sewn 13 Star Ensign / American Flag. Antique 13 Star Flags are highly collectable and hard to find. The time period they mainly come from are The Civil War which are hand sewn flags, The Centennial in 1876 which are usually treadle sewn and then around 1900 give or take 10-20 years. The stars on this rare flag are double appliqued linen stars that are hand cut and hand sewn onto natural dyed blue canton made of wool. The canton is made of two panels which is a sign it was made during war time which produced shortages in all things including material for flags, uniforms, tents etc. The stripes are wool with hand sewing and simple single line treadle stitching. Two wonderful hand sewn repairs. Cotton canvas hoist with two brass grommets. 13 Star flags made in this small size are hard to find as the government and the military was usually the only entities ordering large flags. Individuals had no reason to own a flag like this. There are two possibilities for this flag. One, that it is a US Navy Ensign / Flag as they used smaller flags like this on a smaller vessel. Possibility Two is that it was made as a patriotic symbol during the Civil War and used during one or both of the two Presidential Campaigns for Abraham Lincoln. In either case its a rare flag and would be an asset in anyone’s collection. Beautiful rare flag in fine condition. THE SIZE OF THIS FLAG IS 3.5’X7′ This flag dates from 1860-1880 at the latest.
